Overview

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) isn’t something you hear about often. Usually, NAFLD is a silent disease with few or no symptoms, that can progress into non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer. If you have NASH or get Cirrhosis/Fibrosis, it may be years before symptoms develop.

Millions of people across the globe suffer, and an estimated 20-30% of the UK population has non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

If you have any of the following risk factors, you may be eligible to participate in a research study.

  • Obesity
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol or high triglycerides
  • Type 2 diabetes

If you’re displaying any of these symptoms, your liver might be at risk.  Come in and benefit from a free health check, fibroscan and medical advice.

If you have NASH, no medication is available to reverse the fat build up in your liver. In some cases, the liver damage stops or even reverses itself. But in others, the disease continues to progress.

We need your help to advance world medicines and are looking for volunteers to take part in clinical trials to understand the condition and help find treatment.

As one of the largest and most recognised clinical trial organisations in the world, Synexus provides a friendly relaxed environment where you have the opportunity to help others and maybe also yourself. A clinical trial offers an opportunity to help researchers find better treatments for others in the future.

All Synexus studies are approved by an independent ethics committee.

What is a Fibroscan?

It is a scan similar to an ultrasound used during pregnancy which will measure how elastic (or how stiff) your liver is. A healthy liver should be soft and elastic, and if your liver is stiff this is a sign that some damage has occurred.

How is it done?

It is a painless procedure which involves a probe being passed over the top right area of your stomach.

Your Fibroscan will be carried out at an outpatient clinic appointment.

What are the benefits?

The results of the scan can help your doctor find out about the level of damage that affects your liver, and decide what treatment you might need.

It is helpful for measuring the degree of liver damage in people with:

  • Viral hepatitis B and C
  • Alcoholic liver disease
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Hepatitis C and HIV co-infection
  • Haemochromatosis (iron overload disorder)
  • Other liver diseases

What are the risks?

There are no risks involved. It is painless and not invasive (meaning it’s not carried out inside your body and does not break the skin

The Fibroscan is available at 3 locations at this time – Scotland, Manchester and North Tees.
