Therapy area Diabetes

Diabetes is a lifelong metabolic disorder that affects around 370 million adults worldwide. If you live with type 2 diabetes, you’ll appreciate the importance of looking after your health.

Type 2 Diabetes can result in other conditions such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a silent disease with few or no symptoms. Fatty liver disease can progress into non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer. Approximately 23% of the UK population are estimated to have fatty liver disease, and for Type 2 Diabetics the risk is higher.

If you think you could be at risk, consider enrolling in clinical trials and receive a free Fibroscan to assess the damage in your liver.

  • We are looking for volunteers to take part in clinical trials to better understand the condition and help find new treatments.
  • Eligible participants will receive a free health check, Fibroscan and all study care will be provided at no cost to yourself.
  • Synexus can also help with transport to and from one of our clinics or reimburse reasonable travel expenses.

All Synexus trials are approved by an independent ethics committee.

COVID-19 update — we remain open.

For the safety of both staff and patients, we require that our research sites are COVID-19 SMART facilities. That means they use best practices to reduce virus exposure and are dedicated to ensuring they remain open and available for the research of investigational medications.

COVID-19 SMART steps we are taking to ensure safety include:

  • Greatly increased availability of video office visits
  • Ensuring social distancing measures are taken in all waiting areas
  • Continuing the practice of cleaning and disinfecting exams rooms thoroughly between every patient visit
  • Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for all staff members at our health clinics

Everything you need to know

It is a scan similar to an ultrasound used during pregnancy which will measure how elastic (or how stiff) your liver is. A healthy liver should be soft and elastic, and if your liver is stiff this is a sign that some damage has occurred.

How is it done?

It is a painless procedure which involves a probe being passed over the top right area of your stomach.

Your Fibroscan will be carried out at an outpatient clinic appointment.

What are the benefits?

The results of the scan can help your doctor find out about the level of damage that affects your liver, and decide what treatment you might need.

It is helpful for measuring the degree of liver damage in people with:

  • Viral hepatitis B and C
  • Alcoholic liver disease
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Hepatitis C and HIV co-infection
  • Haemochromatosis (iron overload disorder)
  • Other liver diseases
  • What are the risks?

There are no risks involved. It is painless and not invasive (meaning it’s not carried out inside your body and does not break the skin).

As one of the largest and most recognised clinical trial organisations in the world, Synexus provides a friendly relaxed environment where you have the opportunity to help others and maybe also yourself. A clinical trial offers an opportunity to help researchers find better treatments for others in the future.

Diabetes can result in other conditions such as diabetic gastroparesis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It can also put an extra strain on your heart and increase the risk of having a heart attack or stroke.
